GENERAL VAN TIEN DONG – GENERAL GENERAL OF THE HO CHI MINH EYE

General Van Tien Dung (May 2, 1917 – March 17, 2002) – A talented general, an excellent military man of the Vietnamese nation.

Born in a poor family in Co Nhue village, Tu Liem district, Hanoi city, Van Tien Dung had to drop out of school early and work in textile factories to earn a living. Here, under the oppression of the colonial regime, Van Tien Dung participated and worked actively in the workers’ movement and was soon enlightened to the revolution.

Experiencing many difficulties in the struggle movement, growing up in combat, the worker has become a senior military general in charge of many important roles. In 1953, he was assigned by the Central Committee of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh to be the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, and the longest Chief of Staff in history: 25 years.

During the period of resistance against the US, under the leadership of the Party and the Politburo, at the Headquarters, Chief of the General Staff Van Tien Dung, together with General Vo Nguyen Giap, directed the fronts and won many campaigns; defended Hanoi and the North during the American imperialist’s destructive war… In particular, during the fiercest years of the war, Chief of the General Staff Van Tien Dung was often present at the battlefield, directly commanded key campaigns, such as: Road 9 campaign – Southern Laos; Tri – Thien; The Central Highlands campaign, and especially the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign, successfully ended the resistance war against the US, liberated the South, and reunified the country.

Writing about General Van Tien Dung, General Vo Nguyen Giap commented: “General Van Tien Dung – A general with a spirit of great victory and outstanding tactical skills, a resilient communist, indomitable – devoted his life to the Party’s ideals, to the cause of national liberation and reunification, to the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland. (General Vo Nguyen Giap).

Commemorating the 47th anniversary of the liberation of the South and reunification of the country (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2022); On the occasion of the 105th birthday of General Van Tien Dung (May 2, 1917 – May 2, 2022), the Thang Long Heritage Conservation Center – Hanoi organized the exhibition “General Van Tien Dung – Famous generals of the Vietnamese era”. Great Ho Chi Minh” in gratitude for the great contributions of General, Chief of General Staff Van Tien Dung in the cause of struggle and national liberation; contributed to portraying the portrait of a staunch revolutionary soldier, an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh.

The exhibition introduces 150 documents, artifacts, images including 3 topics:

– The elite son of Hanoi

– Famous generals of the Ho Chi Minh era

– Remembering the General

The highlight of the Exhibition highlights the imprint and role of Chief of General Staff Van Tien Dung at the Vietnam People’s Army Headquarters (House and Tunnel D67) from 1968 to 1975. Here, as assigned of the Politburo and the Central Military Commission, General Van Tien Dung repeatedly left the office, directly commanded the “hot” fronts, which were the turning points of the war.

In particular, between the days leading up to Tet in the Year of the Rabbit (1975), a Chief of the General Staff once again secretly left the Headquarters (House D67) into the Central Highlands, commanding strategic attacks, opening The beginning of the General Offensive and Uprising in the spring of 1975. Those historic spring days were completely won with the Ho Chi Minh campaign – the campaign in which the General was assigned the responsibility of the Politburo as COMMAND.

The exhibition is open to visitors from April 28, 2022. In particular, the Center organizes a meeting and discussion program with historical witnesses and family representatives of General Van Tien Dung.
