Opening of the exhibition “Hanoi and the City Gates”

This morning, October 7, at the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, the opening ceremony of the archival document exhibition with the theme “Hanoi and the City Gates” took place, introducing the history of Hanoi’s City Gates associated with the history of Thang Long – Hanoi on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 1970).
“Hanoi and the Gatehouses” brings about 170 documents and images with content on 03 topics:
Old Gatehouses: Introduction to the history of the formation of the Gatehouses of Thang Long – Hanoi; architecture; role and function of the Gatehouses of Hanoi; changes in names and number of Gatehouses in each period. Under the influence of the French in the planning process of Hanoi in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Gatehouses of Hanoi were gradually destroyed, the Gatehouse of Quan Chuong is the only remaining evidence to this day, marking the existence and shape of the Gatehouses of ancient Thang Long – Hanoi.
Victory Gate: The theme tells the historical story of the event when Uncle Ho’s troops and soldiers of the Capital Regiment from the old gates marched to take over Hanoi in October 1954, especially the Victory Flag Raising Ceremony at the Flagpole Stadium on October 10, 1954, with the participation of the People’s Army units participating in the takeover of the city; documents and images of the days of takeover by the Capital’s army and people in the following sectors: Internal affairs, registration, agriculture, transportation, post, tax, etc.
Hanoi’s Old Gate today: Witnessing the development and changes of Hanoi after 70 years of taking over the capital, the Old Gate is a historical witness of Thang Long – Hanoi through many ups and downs, changes, and is also the place where the song of triumph, joyfully welcoming the victorious army back. Since then, Hanoi has gradually changed its skin, increasingly expanded and developed, with spaces and planning worthy of its stature, with new roads, avenues, and bridges emerging and reaching far. Today, Hanoi, the capital, and the country are firmly on the path of innovation, integration and development. The theme highlights the changing appearance of Hanoi after changes in administrative boundaries; The Party and State’s Capital Planning orientations have helped Hanoi develop in the process of industrialization and modernization; awarded the title “City for Peace” by UNESCO (July 16, 1999); is a member of the Creative Cities Network (October 30, 2019).
The archival exhibition “Hanoi and the City Gates” is open from October 7 to October 30, 2024 at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site.
