Fifty years ago, in the last 12 days and nights of 1972, the army and people of the capital fought bravely, smashing the strategic air raid by the US Empire to destroy North Vietnam, establishing victory. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Victory “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the air” (12/1972 – 12/2022), Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center cooperated with other units to organize a series of events. activities, including: Exhibition “From the ground to the sky” and Application of information technology to interpret the historical story at the T1 Operations Base.

1. Exhibition: “From earth to sky”

The exhibition contributes to clarifying the air defense posture that the troops and people of Hanoi and the northern provinces of Vietnam have prepared and fought to defeat the strategic air raid with the codename Linerbaker II of the US. Especially the commanding role, smoothly connecting the fronts from the Combat Command bunker, the General Staff (Tunnel T1). This is the content of the program of coordination between Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, B.52 Victory Museum, Political Department – Hanoi Capital Command and the Veterans Liaison Committee Air Force Regiment 923.

The exhibition introduces more than 100 documents, including 2 topics:

For the first time, the exhibition introduces the story of 108 Vietnamese pilots, who witnessed the fight to protect national independence and reunification. In particular, it is the story of the pilots who directly participated in the fight to defeat the US imperialist B.52’s strategic air raid at the end of 1972.

Within the framework of the exhibition, the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center in collaboration with the Veterans Liaison Board of the 923rd Airborne Regiment organized a program of talks and exchanges with historical witnesses. brave and heroic fighter pilot of the American B52 Night Flight Squadron. At the same time, launching and introducing the book: “108 Vietnamese fighter pilots” and “Combat command bunker – General Staff in Thang Long Imperial Citadel”.

The memories, shared through the authentic stories of the insiders themselves, will help the public and the young generation once again review the heroic revolutionary tradition of his predecessor’s class, respectfully heroic memory of “a time of bombs, a time of peace”.

Along with the exhibition space held at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, an exhibition called “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the air” was also held at Victory Museum B.52. This is the result of cooperation and exchange of information, documents and artifacts between the two units in order to introduce and promote more widely valuable documents and images of important victories in Vietnam’s military history. 2. Applying information technology to interpret the historical story at T1 Operational Command Tunnel- “T1 tunnel in the night of firestorm”.

The bunker, built in 1964, is the place to receive reports as well as give direct instructions to all battlefields across the country. In particular, during the last 12 days and nights of 1972, the Operations Command Tunnel simultaneously performed three major tasks: Command to shoot down many American aircraft; ensure traffic support for the South; organize the people’s air defense alarm. It was in this bunker that the first whistles sounded to alarm the air defenses throughout Hanoi when American aircraft entered and bombarded the capital. All people are informed to enter the bunker 35 minutes in advance. Armed units ready to fight.
