The program “Tet Doan Ngo in the past and present” at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

Doan Ngo (Doan Duong) is the traditional New Year of Vietnam and some East Asian countries, taking place on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. In the days of the Dragon Boat Festival in feudal dynasties, in the royal court and in folklore, there were different rituals and customs.
In the royal court, Tet Doan Ngo is a regular court ceremony, the king often gives banquets and fans to the martial arts officials. The king’s grace to give fans a deep meaning is to give “Blessings, Health, and Peace” to all homes.
The unique feature of the Tet Doan Ngo is the taste of the homeland, the cultural identity expressed through each custom, each ritual solemnly held by the king in the palace every year.
In order to honor the cultural traditions of the nation and promote the royal cultural values of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, on the occasion of the Dragon Boat Festival, the Thang Long Heritage Conservation Center – Hanoi organizes the program “Tet Doan Ngo in the past and present” in 2022, with the desire to bring visitors unique tourism products, imbued with traditional culture.
This year’s program “Tet Doan Ngo in the past and present” includes: display activities and activities to experiment with the fan ceremony in the ancient royal palace.
For the first time, Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center recreated the space of the fan ceremony in the Royal Palace on the occasion of the Tet Doan Ngo and displayed the fan collection of artisan Duong Van Doan; The royal palace has a size of 2.4m with a poem by King Le Hien Tong written on a fan in 1503; Displays a number of fans for kings, queens and mandarins based on various sources.
In addition, coming to the exhibition space, visitors can also learn about the unique culture of Tet Doan Ngo such as the custom of “killing insects”, the custom of wearing five-color charms through restored five-color amulets based on the five-color charms. According to the artifacts being kept at the Quai Branly Museum (France) and the colorful space of a shop on the old Hang Miu street, the custom of picking herbal medicine promoting folk knowledge using herbs for health care people and fan display in the past and present life… through the display system of artifacts, panels, interpretive paintings will bring many surprises and attractions.
Visitors can also listen to historian Le Van Lan talk about the Tet Doan Ngo rituals in the old palace, culinary artist Nguyen Anh Tuyet introduces the custom of “killing insects” on the Day of the Dragon, artisan Duong Van The delegation introduced the process of making fans…
In particular, in the opening program, the Thang Long Heritage Conservation Center – Hanoi coordinated with the Thang Long Cultural Heritage Association and the Y Van Company to recreate the fan-giving ceremony in the Thang Long royal palace. This is a unique ritual in the Thang Long royal palace that takes place on the occasion of the Tet Doan Ngo, wishing for health and peace for officials and the people.
