In the treasure of Vietnamese folk art, water puppetry is one of the traditional theater types not to be missed in Vietnam in general and especially in Hanoi.

Puppet show has existed for about 1,000 years, it thrived in the Ly – Tran period. Currently, there are no documents to prove the origin of this art. In 1121, the Water Puppet Theater was put into performance to celebrate the life of King Ly Nhan Tong, the evidence shows that on the “Sung Thien Dien pyramid spirit” during the Ly Dynasty, there was a recording of the water puppet performance to celebrate the King’s life. shows that at that time, water puppetry had been handed down for many generations and developed many genres such as: hand puppets, mask puppets, shadow puppets, etc. That proved the art of water puppetry. dating from the Ly period and maturing. Thus, it can be said that water puppetry can be from the X-XI century or earlier.

The art of water puppetry is a cultural product of indigenous ethnic Vietnamese, developed in most villages around Thang Long citadel and most puppet wards in the Northern Delta provinces.

The peasants used logs to form a form of water puppets called water puppets. In each game, we can encounter the usual activities, the familiar work that the farmers still do every day, the image of a buffalo plowing or a slap in the field. All appear vividly.

This is a unique traditional culture of the Vietnamese nation compared to the puppet art of countries around the world.

Coming to Hoang Thanh Thang Long, visitors will enjoy the special water puppet performances. Puppets are controlled via underwater poles or a special arrangement of wires. Take yourselves to the old tales, old legends and the cheers of the audience when animals or puppets suddenly appear from under the water.

The show will take place at 3:30 pm on December 11 – December 29 (except Monday). Come to Hoang Thanh Thang Long to see the special arts and take photos to participate in the “Hoang Thanh in me” photo contest. This is a new tourism product in Hoang Thanh to serve domestic and international visitors.
