Looking for the descendants of General Director Hoang Dieu
22/09/2021
Governor-General Hoang Dieu – who was determined to protect Hanoi citadel when the French attacked in 1882. His example and loyalty will always be remembered and engraved by the next generation. Many children in his family are also considered to be loyal, talented and actively contribute to life. Among them are some highly educated people who have become professors and teachers, some have participated in the resistance war, many are famous and have contributed to the country. Let’s go to find out interesting stories about the Hoang family.
Governor Hoang Dieu was an honest mandarin, filial to his parents. Mr. Hoang Van Hoa said: “When Hoang Dieu was a mandarin in the North, when someone returned to his hometown of Quang Nam, he asked to send his mother a cloth as a filial gift. When the person brought the gift, the mother was working. Receiving a gift from her son, she was unhappy and immediately returned it with a letter and a strawberry whip; in the letter, she told her son that even though he was a mandarin, he had to live with integrity. Our family until now is like a lesson from the family. Our children and grandchildren all follow the example of a poor and honest person.”
From Mr. Hoang Van Hoa, we learned more about Hoang Dieu’s descendants. General Director Hoang Dieu has an older brother named Hoang Kim Giam. Giam died at the age of 34, without a son. Governor Hoang Dieu also had three younger brothers: Hoang Kim Bang, Hoang Binh, and Hoang Vy (later changed to Hoang Chan). Hoang Kim Bang got his bachelor’s degree in 1861. Hoang Vy got his bachelor’s degree in 1870. Hoang Binh passed his baccalaureate. Hoang Kim Bang worked as the Academic Director of Quang Ngai, then promoted to Murder in Quang Binh, Ha Tinh.

After being demoted twice because of his involvement, having a reputation for integrity and excellence, Mr. Hoang Kim Bang was reinstated. After Hoang Dieu’s death, Mr. Bang asked to return to his hometown to take care of his elderly mother and teach. Grandpa Ban died at the age of 50. Hoang Vy, ie. Hoang Chan, was Tri for Truc Ninh district, Xuan Truong district, Nam Dinh. In 1882, Hoang Chan asked to bring Hoang Dieu’s coffin to his hometown for burial and then stay at home to take care of his mother.
In 1885, the Can Vuong uprising was initiated by King Ham Nghi and Ton That Thuyet but failed. Responding to the call for uprising, many patriotic uprising movements emerged after that. Hoang Vy, who joined the Nghia Hoi movement, was captured by Nguyen Than’s troops and burned alive.
In the Hoang family, in addition to the above talented and loyal people, according to Mr. Hoang Van Hoa, the next generation of Governor Hoang Dieu also had other loyal examples. That is Mr. Hoang Tuan, the eldest son of Governor General Hoang Dieu, grandfather of Mr. Hoang Van Hoa.
Hoang Tuan, following in his father’s footsteps, is intelligent and well-educated, has literary talent. At the age of 25, he passed the baccalaureate exam and became a mandarin. In the second Thanh Thai year, he asked to return to his hometown to take care of his elderly mother. In the 8th year of Duy Tan, he was promoted to Thi Duc Academy. Mr. Hoang Tuan was the son-in-law of Pham Phu Thu, a great mandarin of the Nguyen Dynasty, a great innovator at that time.
Mr. Hoang Tuan’s younger brother is Hoang Hiep, also Am born, proficient in literature, well-versed in numerology. Although he did not follow the official road, he was also a patriot, interacting with many philanthropists, taking care of finance for the Nghia Hoi movement. The great-grandfather of Mr. Hoa, Mr. Hoang Van Kiem is also a patriot, participating in the Lien Thanh Association. Mr. Kiem is also an economic innovator in the area, helping to develop irrigation and farming for the villagers.
In this family, there are many more patriotic and people-loving examples. Mr. Hoang Van Hoa said: “Mr. Kiem’s brother, Mr. Hoang Pho, is a medical professional, also a man of rare loyalty. After graduating from Indochina Medicine, Mr. Pho was assigned to work at Hue Hospital, Then he was assigned to Quang Ngai as the Health Director of Quang Ngai province, where he shot dead tigers with a gun, except for people around the area.
On the branch of Mr. Hoang Kim Bang (the younger brother of Governor Hoang Dieu) there are also many outstanding people. Those are the children of Mr. Hoang Ky. Mr. Ky is Mr. Bang’s son, Mr. Ky calls Hoang Dieu his uncle. Mr. Ky used to be a mandarin of the Nguyen Dynasty during the reign of King Duy Tan, King Khai Dinh, and was promoted to Thi Lecturer. Ky’s children are very famous people in the academic world, such as: Hoang Phe, Hoang Tuy, Hoang Quy, Hoang Chung … “.
According to Mr. Hoang Van Hoa, there are many descendants of Governor-General Hoang Dieu living in Ho Chi Minh City. It was the family of his two sisters. There is also the son of his biological brother, Hoang Lan (the son of Hoang Tam), former Dean of the Physics Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Mr. Hoang Lan is now retired and lives in Dong Nai.
We went to Bien Hoa city to meet Mr. Hoang Lan. Mr. Hoang Lan, born in 1943, real name Hoang Dung, 6th generation descendant, is the son of Mr. Hoang Tam (Mr. Tam is the grandson of Governor Hoang Dieu). Lan’s mother is the daughter of doctor Le Dinh Tham – Chairman of Inter-zone 5 during the anti-French period. Mr. Lan used to be a lecturer, Dean of Physics Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.
Mr. Hoang Lan – 6th generation descendant of Governor Hoang Dieu
As a child, he followed his parents to live in many places, mainly in Hanoi. After 3 years of studying Physics at the University of Hanoi, Hoang Lan (who was born Hoang Dung at that time, changed his name when he entered the battlefield, changed his name to Hoang Lan) was allowed to stay for another year. He was one of eight students out of 80 who were guided by Professor Nguyen Dinh Tu from Dupna (former Soviet Union, now Russia – PV) to guide his graduation thesis.
According to Mr. Lan, if it wasn’t for his volunteering in the southern battlefield, he would probably have been a scientist, because then Professor Tu came to ask him to work at the Nuclear Science and Technology Committee in Hanoi. 39 Tran Hung Dao (Hanoi). After April 30, 1975, on a business trip to Saigon, he went to look for Mr. Lan at the Department of Education but no one knew. Because when I focused on training for B, everyone had to change their name at that time, so I changed my name to Hoang Lan, so Mr. Tu just asked for Hoang Dung. That’s how we can see that Tu’s teacher-student relationship is rare. “And that was the last chance, I could do my wish, was missed” – Mr. Hoang Lan confided.
After the liberation of the South, Mr. Lan returned to take over the old education sector. Then he applied to study the first master’s course at Hanoi National University of Education. Two years later, he was assigned to teach at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education until his retirement. Years of working at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, knowing that the University of Ho Chi Minh City was recruiting students for Physics PhD students, he applied to study immediately. This is the first domestic PhD student course of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. However, many years on the battlefield made his mind “stiff” so he stopped doing research after that.
Talking to us, Mr. Hoang Lan expressed concern about Physics and basic science. He wished the State would invest more in basic science to contribute to the country’s wealth and prosperity.
Hoang Van Hoa himself was also a military medical soldier, then changed his profession to work at Liberation Radio in Hanoi. 60 years old Party, he has been conferred many noble badges. Humble nature, when I asked to write about him, he refused, saying that he had no merit worth mentioning. I asked him: “In your opinion, what quality is outstanding in the family?” He said: “My family for generations has lived in purity, integrity and uprightness. I have experienced that, in the family line, after Hoang Dieu, many people have taught or practiced medicine to serve society.” In the family of Governor-General Hoang Dieu, following the example and following the tradition of studiousness and loyalty of their ancestors, there are also many well-educated and famous people. There are also many contributions to the country in many fields, from science, to military…
We asked Mr. Hoang Van Hoa: “What is the most impressive thing in Hoang Dieu’s life?” His face brightened with a wit and wit, he said: “The career of our great-grandfather is well known, especially about his courageous death when Ha Thanh fell. That death spurred the people’s patriotism and hatred for the enemy. That’s also what impressed me the most. The position of the enemy was strong, the treason was unpredictable, the court was weak and corrupt, he was in a situation of “powerlessness to disobey his heart”, pitifully, and sadly watched the city’s loss, the house was destroyed… As expected, before the situation, before martyrdom, he wrote Expression of love, sent to King Tu Duc, expressing his heart”.
According to Mr. Hoa, in addition to Expression of love, Hoang Dieu also wrote Essays on Ngu Hanh Son, Prohibition on Exclusion of Currency and a poem that was lost in words, “The Way of the Road”. Up to now, all of his literary and poetic works have been burned by the war, or are still lost somewhere and have not been collected.
The family’s literary and poetic bloodline still circulated in him, so when he retired, he joined the Ham Tu Poetry Club of District 5. His poetry was simple but profound, with rich meanings. In the poem “Fifteen Years” of Ham Tu Poetry Club he gave me, there is still a loyal heart to the country hidden in his poetry: “The time of slavery was heartbreaking for the people to lose the country/ A hundred years of shame and hatred Sadness / The mountains and rivers are divided, mourning and mourning… Ba Dinh sunshine shines Autumn August / Hai Dien Bien “red flowers” are bright with yellow names …” (excerpt from “Brightening milestones”).
When we went to see Mr. Hoa, knowing that we were journalists, wanted to write an article about Governor Hoang Dieu, Mr. Hoa called his son, Mr. Hoang Xuan Ninh, to come home to play. Like his father, Mr. Hoang Xuan Ninh – Lieutenant Colonel, Chief of the Police Department of Ward 7, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, is also very humble in front of a thick family tradition.
Mr. Ninh said he was born in Hanoi. His childhood was much attached to the streets of the Civilized Capital. When he was a child, he went to school through Hoang Dieu street, he still didn’t know it was his great-grandfather. Later, when I grew up, I heard my father tell me about it. Working in the police force, he still thinks of following the example of his ancestors, living with integrity and honesty. Hoang Dieu’s example left me with many valuable lessons, such as honesty, frankness, concern for the people, protection of the people, fighting against evil, upholding the righteous heart …”.
I asked him about his days working in the police force, have you ever faced challenges and safety and might have to struggle to keep your will to your family, clan, and force, but he just smiled and told me that “every profession has its perils. The job that you …”.
For many years, his family still lives in an apartment building, behind the headquarters of the Ward 7 Police Department, where he works.
Many generations after each other, in this family remains intact, forever shining the example of loyalty and patriotism. From the example of their fathers, they bravely set out to fight to protect their homeland when the country was invaded by the French and then the American invaders. That is the story of Mr. Hoang Lan, the sixth generation descendant of Governor Hoang Dieu. Mr. Lan used to participate in the battlefield, used to live with the son of writer Ngo Tat To in the battlefield. Between the line of life and death, they had an interesting story about human love.
Attached to the Governor General Hoang Dieu is Cua Bac relic – Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. Besides the valuable archeological values underground, we easily recognize the point that is deeply carved into the wall. It is the evidence of the invasion by artillery of the French colonialists in the second invasion of Hanoi in 1882 and the resistance of our army and people.

In that war, Governor-General Hoang Dieu heroically commanded Hanoi’s army and people to fight to protect the citadel. In an unequal battle, unable to resist, Hanoi citadel fell. He knew he couldn’t resist anymore, so he went to the palace to write a letter to King Tu Duc and then went to the Temple of Martial Arts to take his own head scarf to preserve the weather. Hoang Dieu has raised the patriotism spirit, he is a shining example for many generations of Vietnamese to follow.
At Cua Bac relic in Thang Long Imperial Citadel, every year, on the 8th day of the 3rd lunar month, an incense offering ceremony takes place in memory of the death of Governor Hoang Dieu and the martyrs who fought and died. Born, kept Hanoi citadel, defended the country. This is a very meaningful activity to educate the tradition for future generations, respecting the precious historical values and heroic traditions of the ancestors.
