Hanoi Flagpole – Historical Symbol of the Capital

The monument “Hanoi flagpole” is located on Dien Bien Phu Street, in Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, built in 1812, during the reign of King Gia Long of the Nguyen Dynasty on the southern part of Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, where the building was built. Tam Mon citadel of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long during the Le dynasty. This is the reference point, marking the origin at the southern end of the central main axis of the citadel, from here along the “fishing line”, past Doan Mon and then to the most important point, the central point of the Imperial Citadel is Kinh Thien Palace. .
Hanoi flagpole is now the most intact and monumental work in the relic complex of Hoang Thanh Thang Long.

The Flagpole is built with three floors and a column body.

From the first floor to the third floor, there are spiral staircases leading up.

On the 3rd floor is the body of a cylindrical flag with 8 sides tapering upwards, each side 2.13 m with a body height of 18.2 m. The spiral trapezoidal cylinder consists of 54 steps; illuminated (and vented) by 39 asterisks and 6 fan-shaped windows. These windows are placed along the edges, each side has up to 5 or 6 windows.

The top of the flagpole is composed of an octagonal floor, 3.3 m high with 8 windows corresponding to 8 sides. In the middle of the floor is a round pillar, 0.4 m in diameter and up to the top of the floor, a place to place the flag handle 8 m high, above the red flag with yellow star.

The whole building from the base to this pillar is 33.4 m high, including 3 poles 12 m high, 18.2 m high pillar, 3.3 m floor. If including flag posts, it is over 40 m.

When the French destroyed Hanoi, they intended to destroy the flagpole, fortunately they did not do this, because they wanted to turn it into a horse racing station.
