Archaeological excavations at the Central Area of Thang Long Imperial Citadel

On March 25, 2024, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong signed and issued Decision No. 721/QD-BVHTTDL allowing the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center to coordinate with The Institute of Archeology excavated at 03 locations in the Central Area of Thang Long Imperial Citadel – Hanoi.
Accordingly, the excavation period is from March 25, 2024 to December 25, 2024, including 02 phases:
Phase I: From March 25, 2024 to July 31, 2024 (excavation of holes H1, H2, H3);
Phase II: From August 1, 2024 to December 25, 2024 (excavation of hole H4). The excavation area is 990m2, specifically: Location No. 1: Excavation hole H1: 200m2 (in Hau Lau area); Location No. 2: Excavation pit H2: 30m2 (on the foundation of Kinh Thien Palace); Location 3: Excavation hole H3: 120m2; Excavation hole H4: 640m2 (at the location of the Operations Department House). The excavation chair is Mr. Ha Van Can, Institute of Archeology.
During the excavation, the licensed agency must pay attention to protecting the stratigraphy of the monument; is responsible for propagating to the people about the protection of local cultural heritage and not announcing official conclusions without the agreement of the governing agency and the Department of Cultural Heritage.
The artifacts collected during the excavation process, the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center must be responsible for preserving, preserving and reporting to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on protection plans. and promote the value of those artifacts.
After finishing the excavation, the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center and the Institute of Archeology must have a preliminary report and propose a plan to manage and protect the excavated area as soon as possible. 01 month and scientific report within 01 year at the latest, sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Before announcing the results of the excavation, the licensed agency discussed and agreed with the Department of Cultural Heritage.
